Aston Martin DB2 Washboard Bonnet Side Grilles
New- DB2 First Sanction
- DB2
Handmade brass side grilles commonly known as “washboard” grilles, are a distinctive feature on DB2 First Sanction and early DB2 models. These characteristic grilles are positioned behind the front wheels on the lower bonnet sides, providing both functional airflow and authentic period styling.
Each handed grille‑set comprises a slatted grille section and trim surround, both meticulously crafted in brass and secured through the bodywork via 2BA brass studs. The surround mounts to the exterior bonnet skin while the slatted grille is fitted, and vents from the interior.
At DMark® we have enhanced* the original design with a solid brass surround profile—an improvement over the period thin brass sheet construction—delivering better integrity without any aesthetic differences.
Manufactured using our proprietary DMark® custom tooling, jigs, patterns and manufacturing aids developed from dimensional data sourced from multiple parts and vehicles. This represents the first opportunity for customers to purchase a complete new DB2 washboard side grille‑set.
These washboard grilles were a defining characteristic of the First Sanction cars, complementing the distinctive three‑piece vertically‑slatted front radiator grille set that was also exclusive to these earliest production models. Together, these grille elements created the unique brightwork and visual signature that distinguished these models from all subsequent DB2 variants.
All DMark® washboard grille‑sets are finished as polished brass, with every front‑facing surface meticulously polished and chrome‑ready.
Customers may receive their new grille‑sets in polished brass or chrome finish. DMark® partners exclusively with established, reputable electroplating specialists who share our exacting quality standards.
The washboard grilles are essentially bolt‑on components, so many clients prefer us to manage the chrome plating process. However, we understand that some customers prefer to handle plating themselves—particularly when coordinating comprehensive restoration work and batching chrome components together after a dry‑fit.
Primarily made‑to‑order, with occasionally one set in stock for immediate dispatch.
All fixtures and fasteners (nuts and bolts) are supplied with every set.
Our brass slats use 0.9/1mm gauge (20 SWG) brass compared to the original late 1940s specification of approximately 0.7mm (22 SWG). This increased material thickness, combined with other refinements including our solid brass surround, delivers superior rigidity and structural integrity across all DMark® grille assemblies.
Customers should be aware that vehicles with extensive repairs may have altered bodywork geometry due to paintwork processes and body filler usage, which can subtly affect panel shape where grilles are positioned. We have taken considerable care to replicate the most authentic original geometry, though this may occasionally differ from a vehicle’s current surface characteristics. Similarly, stud hole positions in bodywork may vary from new DMark® component specifications and minor adjustments may occasionally be required to achieve optimal fitment.
